Optional PSAT-NMSQT for 11th Graders

Tuesday, October 10, 2023

This is an SAT Suite of Assessments exam that is used to determine eligibility for the National Merit Scholar Program. This exam will be offered as an optional test to all LHS 11th graders only. Information regarding this exam and associated signup fees will be distributed to all 11th graders in the Fall.

PSAT 8/9 - FOR 8TH GRADERS

In previous years, LHS has hosted a Saturday event for 8th-graders to take the PSAT 8/9 (Preliminary SAT). Beginning in the fall of 2023, 8th-graders attending public middle schools will be taking the PSAT 8/9 at their respective middle schools during the school day. This change is occurring for two reasons:

First, the Accelerated Placement Act goes into effect during the 2023-24 school year. This act requires Illinois public school districts to automatically enroll students who meet or exceed state standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, or Science in the next most rigorous level of coursework in that content area the following school year. While LHS has always used PSAT 8/9 scores as part of the placement process, we were never able to achieve a 100% participation rate when holding this test on a Saturday. With the implementation of the Accelerated Placement Act, it is imperative that we have PSAT 8/9 scores for ALL incoming 9th-graders so that we can properly place them into courses and offer every single student a fair and equitable opportunity to access higher level coursework.

In addition to this, the SAT Suite of Assessments, of which the PSAT 8/9 is a part, is moving from paper-based to digital this school year. Due to this change and its implications for technology needs, LHS, along with its public feeder middle schools, has determined that students will have the best testing experience by taking this test at their middle school.

The PSAT 8/9 will take place at public middle schools between October 2 and October 31, 2023. More information about the test, including specific test dates, will be made available to students and their families by their respective middle school.
