Randy Sundell, longtime Director of Bands at Vernon Hills High School was elected to the American Bandmasters Association (ABA) this past weekend at the ABA annual convention in Fort Worth, TX. The American Bandmasters Association was founded in 1929, with John Phillip Sousa named lifetime president. Since its inception the ABA has been responsible for the development of the most prominent Journal for band teaching, and has become the hall-of-fame of the band world. Selection requires a nomination from a current member of the ABA, as well as member review of nearly a decade of performance recordings. Currently, less than ten band directors from the state of Illinois, at both the high school and collegiate levels, have been selected as members of the ABA. This distinction recognizes the outstanding achievements of Mr. Sundell and the students in the VHHS band department over the entire history of the school. Mr. Sundell's selection for the ABA also cements him as one of the foremost instrumental music educators in the United States. Congrats Mr. Sundell!
