Dustin Helvie

Dustin Helvie received his Music Education and Trumpet Performance degree from the University of Iowa, Masters of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music and finished Maters in Educational Leadership degree from Benedictine University. Before joining the Libertyville staff, Mr. Helvie was the Assistant Director of Bands at Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa. There, he was responsible for the Concert Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra, and assisting with the Royal RiverKing Marching Band under the direction of David Gaulrapp.

Mr. Helvie joined the Libertyville faculty in 1999. His responsibilities include serving as the Fine Arts Department Supervisor, conducting Symphonic Winds, assisting with the choral program at LHS and Music Director of the fall musical. Mr. Helvie was also a faculty member at Vernon Hills High School. Under his direction, the bands at Libertyville have received Superior ratings at IHSA Organizational Contest. Mr. Helvie was selected to be the music director of the 2008 Illinois All-State Theatre production of Hairspray. Libertyville’s productions of Pippin and Drowsy Chaperone were also chosen as full-length showcase performances during the Illinois High School Theatre Festival.

Mr. Helvie is an active performer having performed with the Illinois Brass Band, Chicago Brass Band, Waukegan Municipal Band and the CLC Wind Ensemble. He performs actively as a pit orchestra musician throughout the Chicago suburbs. He serves as a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor for several regional music festivals. At the University of Iowa, he performed with the Hawkeye Marching Band, Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Johnson County Landmark Big Band. In 1998, he was selected as an advisor for the 500-member seven-country tour with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music. Mr. Helvie is an active member of the International Trumpet Guild, Music Educators National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Helvie lives in Grayslake with his wife Sarah and children Xander and Jordyn.
