Libertyville High School Receives U.S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award

Community High School District 128 is proud to announce that Libertyville High School has been named the recipient of the 2018 U. S. Department of Education National Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award. U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the nation's Blue Ribbon Schools for 2018 on Oct. 1. The 349 schools recognized will be honored at an awards ceremony on Nov. 7-8 in Washington, D.C. The Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence is an extremely competitive and rigorous award competition and is the highest distinction granted to schools by the U. S. Department of Education.

"This recognition further validates Libertyville High School’s place among the best high schools in the nation, and this is a very special moment for LHS, the Libertyville community, and District 128," said District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea. "Congratulations to LHS Principal Tom Koulentes and his team for their continued work in making LHS a school of excellence."

The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 36th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 8,800 schools. Recipient schools are honored in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates. LHS was recognized in the exemplary high performing school category. Schools recognized in this category are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

LHS celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. The school has received a myriad of state and national honors including being ranked 12th in Illinois high schools by U.S. News & World Report, and in the top 2% of all public high schools nationally. LHS was also a 1990 recipient of the U.S. Dept of Education National Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award.

LHS Principal Tom Koulentes said of the school’s latest honor, “We are proud the United States Department of Education has recognized LHS as one of the best high schools in the nation by awarding us the Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence. We believe this award is a testament to the great work of many people, over many years, all of whom worked as a team to bring our school to this level of excellence. We are grateful to our teachers and staff, who make extraordinary efforts each day to support our students. We are grateful to our Libertyville and District 128 communities, as well as our Board of Education, who provide us with the resources and partnership needed to keep our school vibrant and strong. Most importantly, we are deeply grateful to our students for the way they consistently inspire us with their passion for learning, their school spirit, and their genuine commitment to making their world a better place. We are all proud to be Libertyville Wildcats!”
