Activities for Lifetime Fitness - Course No.: 8563F, 8564S

Activities for Lifetime Fitness assesses current levels of individual fitness and instructs on the knowledge and skills to develop an individualized fitness plan.  Students will receive instruction in the essential skills and strategies in a variety of fitness and recreational activities. They will use these activities as a means to improve and/or maintain various aspects of their health-related fitness. These activities will include but are not limited to basketball, soccer, flicker ball, team handball, volleyball and softball.
Students will also participate in individual fitness activities that promote cardiovascular fitness and strength. These activities will include but are not limited to:
Circuit Training includes a combination of running and strength activities. Sprinting, jogging, jumping rope, calisthenics, and strength band exercises are among the activities in which students will be participating.
Distance Running is for those students who enjoy this activity for fitness. Students will use runs (both on and off campus) of at least 1.5 miles for cardiovascular training. Participants are expected to dress for outdoor weather.
Fitness Center students will choose cardio activities in the form of stationary biking, treadmill, U.B.E. and/or strength activities on individual selectorized machines.
Interval Training uses running for short distances and repeat training with regulated rest intervals to improve fitness. The activities in this unit also include plyometrics, jump rope work, and agility exercises. This class may be indoors or outdoors.
Group Exercise: Aerobic Dance, Calisthenics, Pilates, Dance Revolution, etc.
In all the above Polar Heart Rate Technology will be used to teach about perceived exertion, as well as individualized evaluation of intensity during participation in individual fitness, dual sport, and team activities. Tracking of student participation in these activities will be done through the use of FitLinxx technology.

CrossFit - Course No.: 8501F, 8502S

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Exemptions are permitted, Extended Study Option. Global Scholar Course. Offered Zero Hour 7:50 a.m. - 8:35 a.m.

CrossFit is a repeatable course offered to students who are interested in HIGH intensity multi functional training.  The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. CrossFit scales the load and intensity; it doesn’t change programs.  CrossFit delivers a fitness that is by design, broad, general and  inclusive.

Dance I - Course No.: 8521F, 8522S

GRADES:  10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5   OTHER: Students are required to wear VHHS PE uniform. The purchase of 1 pair of dance shoes is recommended.  Heart Rate Monitors will be worn as part of their grade. Athletic exemptions are permitted. Extended Study Option.

Dance I: INTRODUCTION TO DANCE is a semester long class for students with little to no previous dance experience. Students will explore various dance forms including jazz, modern, hip hop,  ballet, and tap. The fundamentals of dance technique will be introduced. Basic dance improvisation and composition strategies will be studied to discover options for artistic expression. Students will work in small groups to choreograph and perform brief dance phrases. Weekly mind/body fitness activities will be practiced to support the dancer’s physical conditioning. Dance I may be repeated for a maximum of three semesters and is open to all sophomores, juniors and seniors. After completing three semesters of Dance I, the student must register for Dance II or another course in the PE curriculum. Students who have already taken Dance II or Dance III may not register for Dance I without teacher’s permission.

Dance II - Course No.: 8523F, 8524S

GRADES:  10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Students are required to wear VHHS PE uniform. The purchase of 1 pair of dance shoes is recommended. Athletic exemptions are permitted. Extended Study Option.

Dance II: Dance Technique And Repertory is a semester long class for students with a minimum of one year of previous dance experience.The class will focus on the study of dance technique in a variety of dance styles including jazz, ballet, tap, and modern. More complex and extensive dance repertory will be learned and performed in each of the dance styles. The students will continue to develop their artistic expression through expanded study of improvisation and dance composition strategies. Class activities will feature the opportunity to apply dance knowledge through small group choreography assignments. Dance ll students will perform publicly in the Fall Semester Dance Demonstration performance. Weekly fitness activities will be practiced to support the dancer’s physical conditioning. Dance ll may be repeated for a maximum of three semesters and is open to all sophomores, juniors and seniors. After completing three semesters of Dance ll, the student must either received teacher permission for placement in Dance lll or register for another course in the PE curriculum.

Dance III - Course No.: 8528

GRADES: 10*, 11, 12 LENGTH: Full Year CREDIT: 1.0
OTHER: Students are required to wear VHHS PE uniform. The purchase of 1 pair dance shoes is recommended.  Heart Rate Monitors will be worn as part of their grade. *This course is open to Sophomores with extensive dance experience, with instructor approval. Athletic exemptions are permitted.

Dance III: Choreography, Production And Performance is a year long class for students with multiple years of previous dance experience and a strong interest in public performance and choreography. Students will study advanced dance technique and performance qualities in numerous dance forms such as jazz, ballet, modern and tap dance. The curriculum will focus on cultivating the dancer’s unique artistic voice, and expressive options will be expanded and refined through the study of advanced dance improvisation, composition, and movement analysis. Students will work both independently and with others to produce and present dance choreography, showcasing this work once each semester. Performance in the Fall Dance Demonstration and Spring Orchesis Dance Concert will be required of all Dance lll students. Weekly fitness activities will be practiced to support the dancer's physical conditioning. Dance lll may be repeated for a maximum of two years and is open to juniors and seniors. Registration for this class will be permitted with teacher placement only.

Fitness Training Zero Hour  - Course No.: 8597FZ, 8599SZ 

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Athletic exemptions not permitted. Meets 0 Hour 7:50 a.m. - 8:35 a.m.    

Fitness Training is a high intensity fitness program where attendance and high level participation is essential to success. It is open to 10, 11 and 12th graders only, and is a repeatable class.  This class will meet before school in various learning environments such as the: cardio room, field house, wrestling room, gymnasium, gymnastics gym and/or various outdoor areas. A variety of workouts will be done over the course of the semester and will incorporate state of the art modalities and current best practice. Modalities and procedures that will be used will include but not be limited to: Polar heart rate monitors,  stationary bikes, treadmills, weight machines, long distance runs, interval runs, circuit training, plyometrics, pilates, TRX training, CrossFit principals and other means of fitness.

Inclusive Physical Education - Course No.: 8511

GRADES: 11, 12 LENGTH: Full Year CREDIT: 1.0 OTHER: Athletic exemptions not permitted.

Integrated Physical Education focuses on enhancing the students’ physical fitness and motor skills, self-confidence, self-image, friendships, and social skills; skills that will be used the rest of their lives. Students will participate in aquatics, track and field, floor hockey, soccer, football, strength training, badminton, softball, gymnastics, bocce ball, bowling, basketball, and volleyball. Integrated Physical Education also encourages students to participate in Special Olympics Illinois. Student leaders assist and mentor each special needs student to help provide him/her successful experiences. Leaders are required to fill out an application their sophomore year to be accepted into the Junior Leaders program as a Junior. After completing the Junior Leaders program, these particular students will be able to assist in the Integrated Physical Education class. Students enrolled in this class will not be permitted to exempt from Physical Education at any time during the year.

Junior Leaders - Course No.: 8520

GRADES: 11 LENGTH:  Full Year CREDIT: 1.0 OTHER:  Athletic exemptions not permitted.          

Junior Leaders is a course that fulfills all of the state standards required in the core physical welfare program. Additionally, students will be taught leadership techniques (including problem solving, decision making, and understanding group dynamics), will be given the opportunity practice these skills, and will model these skills while working with their peers in one-on-one and small/large group settings.  Students enrolled in this class will not be permitted to exempt from physical education at any time during the semester.
PREREQUISITE: Application completed and acceptance into the program from the physical welfare selection process

LIFE - Nutrition and Fitness - Course No.:  7257F, 7258S

GRADES: 11, 12  LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Fulfills 1 semester of VHHS PE requirement. Athletic exemptions not permitted.

In this course, students will gain an in-depth understanding of how nutrition fuels the body for fitness and learn how to create healthy habits for the rest of their lives. The students will incorporate hands on laboratory experiences that promote healthy behavior management aimed at achieving personal goals. They will pursue a variety of experiences(decision making, self awareness, self management, etc.), reflect on progress, and apply these experiences to their everyday life. LIFE students will develop strategies to support their personal goals in health and nutrition to lead an active, healthy, and balanced lifestyle while learning to think and move creatively.

Lifeguard Training - Course No.: 8531F, 8532S

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 RED CROSS FEES: $85.00
OTHER: Students who earn an “A” or “B” may repeat this course for grade and credit. Athletic exemptions not permitted. Extended Study Option.     

Lifeguard Training is offered to students who wish to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification which will be awarded upon completion of all the required components. Students enrolled in this class will not be permitted to exempt from physical education at any time during the semester. Students may only take Lifeguard Training once a year
PREREQUISITE: Be able to swim 300 yards non-stop, tread water for 2 minutes without using arms, bring a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the pool to the surface then swim with the brick for 20 yards in under 1:40, and perform effective strokes in the front crawl and the breaststroke.

Mind-Body Fitness - Course No.: 8512F, 8513S

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Students are required to wear VHHS PE uniform and/or proper yoga attire.*Heart Rate Monitors will be worn as part of grade.  Athletic exemptions are permitted. Extended Study Option

Mind-Body Fitness is a semester long class open to all students in grades 10,11, 12 focusing on Yoga and related practices. Students of diverse physical backgrounds will benefit from this course, and no previous experience in mind-body practice is necessary. The class will offer an in-depth study of the fundamental principles and techniques of a variety of Yoga disciplines. As the semester progresses, opportunities for advanced application of knowledge and skills will be presented. Throughout the course, students will participate in self-assessments and reflections while learning how to safely tailor their practice to meet their individual needs. The Yoga asanas practiced in class will promote muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, proper posture, core stability, balance, coordination, stress reduction, mental focus, and self-esteem. Class activities will also include weekly cardio days and one research project.  Students will not be able to repeat the class for credit.

Outdoor Adventure Challenge I - Course No.: 8537F, 8538S

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Athletic exemptions not permitted.

Outdoor Adventure Challenge I allows students to gain knowledge and insight into a variety of challenging outdoor activities. Lifelong skills are acquired through participation in team initiatives, rock climbing, rappelling, camping, backpacking, kayaking, and fishing.. As participants in these activities, students will gain self-confidence, learn to build trust, develop effective communication skills, and learn important cooperative behaviors. Successful completion of these Outdoor Activity and Life skills will be required for enrollment in Outdoor Adventure Challenge II. Students will not be able to repeat the class for credit. Students enrolled in this class will not be permitted to exempt from physical education at any time during the semester. 20% of curriculum is taught in the swimming pool.
PREREQUISITE: Must be able to swim, feel comfortable in the water, and know that they will spend 4 weeks in the pool. There will be a mandatory swim assessment at the beginning of the course that students must successfully pass in order to stay enrolled in the course.

Outdoor Adventure Challenge II - Course No.: 8547F, 8548S

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER: Athletic exemptions not permitted.    

Outdoor Adventure Challenge II provides students the opportunity to participate in several activities that were not offered in the Outdoor/Adventure Challenge I level course as well as activities similar to those encountered in Outdoor/Adventure Challenge I but at a more rigorous level/pace. As participants in these activities, students will continue to gain self-confidence, learn to build trust, develop effective communication skills, and learn important cooperative behaviors. Activities in the course include camping, snorkeling, advanced climbing, and high rope course. Students will not be able to repeat the class for credit.Students enrolled in this class will not be permitted to exempt from physical education at any time during the semester. 20% of curriculum is taught in the swimming pool.
PREREQUISITE: Outdoor Adventure Challenge I.

Strength and Conditioning I - Course No.: 8572F, 8576S, (Zero Hour) - 8579FZ. 8580SZ

Strength and Conditioning I is a repeatable course offered to students who are interested in improving their strength and cardiovascular fitness through HIGH intensity training. Since the course includes high intensity weight training and aerobic activity, students with any pre-existing medical condition that would limit them from performing at advanced levels of strength and endurance training, or performing any of the core strength tests (1 repetition max of the Bench Press, Power Cleans, and Squats) do not qualify for this course. Students will set individual goals, and these goals will be frequently assessed using a variety of cardiovascular and strength related tests.

Strength and Conditioning II - Course No.: 8577F, 8578S

GRADES: 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 OTHER:. Athletic exemptions are permitted. Extended Study Option.        

Strength and Conditioning II is a higher level strength and conditioning course that will build upon the foundation of skills and information learned in Strength Training I (SC I) and Crossfit. It will involve students performing various lifts and exercises that they have learned previously and will build upon them.  Students will be able to utilize all of the information they have learned in all of their physical welfare classes and implement them into their individualized strength training program.  There will be a culminating project where students will be able to show what they have learned within the course.
