VHHS Special Services Department Philosophy Statement

The Special Services Department is committed to providing a supportive environment in which students with special education needs can develop intellectual, academic, physical, emotional, social and civic life skills. The department strives to assist each student in accessing learning opportunities offered by their high school and through our district. The Special Services program supports each student’s effort to become a self-aware, self-directed, and self-advocating learner while on their personal journey towards post-secondary pursuits.  The individualized services afforded to students through Special Services programming strive to foster a student’s Awareness of and Resilience in their unique learning needs as they prepare to be responsible contributors to and participants in local and global society.  

Special Services courses provide specialized instruction and support to eligible students. A student’s Individualized Education Planning (IEP) team determines a student’s eligibility for special education instruction and related services according his or her unique learning needs. The identification, placement, and provision of special education services are governed by federal and state regulations and are provided with the input of the professional staff, the student and their parents/guardians.  

Courses are designed to meet individual learner needs and address any exceptional characteristic that impedes learning. Each eligible student has a written IEP that specifies annual goals, benchmarks and related services. The Special Services Program is led by the Director of Special Services for Community High School District 128. The Special Services Department Co-Supervisor coordinates the programs within the high school building.  Student needs are met by professional instructors, related service providers and paraprofessional teacher assistants.

Courses listed in this department will be offered on a need basis and may not be available every year.
