French I is an introductory course to the French language and francophone culture.  It introduces the student to practical vocabulary and basic grammatical structures that enable the student to participate in basic conversation and self-expression.  Students gain beginning proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  The introduction of cultural products, practice, and perspectives is also an integral part of the course.

French II Honors - Course No.: 7523

GRADES: 9, 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: Full Year CREDIT: 1.0 OTHER: Global Scholar Course

French II builds on the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills developed in level 1 by broadening student knowledge of vocabulary and more complex structures.  Students expand their level of self-expression in everyday situations with family and friends. Classroom instruction is centered on an in-depth exploration of cultures, products, and practices through the use of authentic materials.  Students continue to expand their cultural understanding and awareness.
PREREQUISITE: Placement for grade 9; previous level or placement

Language Culture Study Abroad - Course No.: 7537 (0.5 credit), 7538 (1.0 credit)

GRADES: 9, 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: Varies OTHER: A maximum of 1.0 credit may be received throughout a student’s four years in high school. Grades received will not be included in the student’s GPA.         

Language Culture Study Abroad is an opportunity for a student who participates in a recognized study abroad program to be awarded credit. The study of a foreign language and increased proficiency in that language must be demonstrated upon his/her return in the form of transcripts or a written evaluation by the program instructor, and an interview with the World Languages Supervisor. 1.0 credit will be awarded following participation in a recognized study abroad program that afforded the student a minimum of nine months study abroad once department expectations have been met. 0.5 credits will be awarded following participation in a recognized study abroad program that afforded the student three weeks or more of experience and language study abroad once department expectations have been met.
PREREQUISITE: Placement; interested students must contact the World Languages Supervisor for program approval prior to enrollment.

Spanish Language Arts I Honors - Course No.: 7545  

GRADES: 9, 10, LENGTH: Full Year CREDIT: 1.0

Spanish Language Arts I Honors is designed specifically for students with prior language experience, through dual-language courses or as native/heritage speakers of Spanish, to continue development of their literacy skills. Students will explore the cultures and literature of the Hispanic world which will enable students to gain a better understanding of the nature of the Spanish language. Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Upon completion of this course, students will proceed to Spanish Language Arts II.

Spanish Language Arts II Honors - Course No.: 7546

GRADES: 9, 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: Full Year CREDIT: 1.0

Spanish Language Arts II Honors is designed specifically for students with prior language experience, through dual-language courses or as native/heritage speakers of Spanish, to continue development of their literacy skills utilized in SLA I.  Emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. The study of history, geography and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking Latin America is a central component of this course. This course prepares students for success in the AP Spanish Language and Culture course and also expands literacy skills which will benefit students cross curricularly.
PREREQUISITE: Spanish Language Arts I or Placement
