GRADES: 9 (2nd semester), 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.5 FEES: $245.00 OTHER: Behind the Wheel Phase will be on a Pass/Fail basis. Driver Education will not be factored into the GPA.

Driver Education is a two-phase program that includes classroom instruction and on-the-road driving. Both phases are closely integrated. Students who enroll in Driver Education for the first time will be exempt from Physical Education during that semester.

The classroom phase is required of every student for graduation. Students will receive a minimum of 30 hours of instruction in the semester. The curriculum includes defensive driving techniques, attitudes and emotions, adverse driving conditions, buying/maintaining/insuring your car, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving, information included in the Illinois Rules of the Road booklet, and other topics.

In addition to the classroom phase, successful completion of the behind-the-wheel phase is required in order to take the Illinois State Drivers License Exam after reaching age 16. This phase of the course will include six hours of in-the-car, on-the-road driving.
   
PREREQUISITE: Sophomores: Sophomore standing and 15 years of age. Students must pass 8 academic classes during the previous calendar year. To be eligible to enroll first semester student must turn 15 before March 31st.
Freshman: 2nd Semester Freshmen may be eligible if they have turned 15 prior to December 1st, however will be required to participate in health / PE during their freshman year.
