What we've been reading:

  • Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee
    • Genre: historical
Summary: Valora Luck has two things: a ticket for the biggest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world, and a dream of leaving England behind and making a life for herself as a circus performer in New York. Much to her surprise, though, she's turned away at the gangway; apparently, Chinese people aren't allowed into America. But Val has to get on that ship. Her twin brother, Jamie, who has spent two long years at sea, is on board, as is an influential circus owner. Thankfully, there's not much a trained acrobat like Val can't overcome when she puts her mind to it. As a stowaway, Val should keep her head down and stay out of sight. But the clock is ticking and she has just seven days as the ship makes its way across the Atlantic to find Jamie, audition for the circus owner, and convince him to help get them both into America. Then one night, the unthinkable happens, and suddenly Val's dreams of a new life are crushed under the weight of the only thing that matters: survival.
    • Also by this author: The Downstairs Girl, Under a Painted Sky, Outrun the Moon
  • The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
    • Genre: fantasy
    • Summary: Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.
    • LMC will look into getting this book (But it's 1007 pages!)
  • Question: Do you read a prequel before or after the other books in the series?
    • Several club memebrs said they read a prequel based onthe date it was released, which is often after the other books in a series
    • "Otherwise, it can be confusing!"

Overheard at Book Club:

  • "I can't get books fast enough."
  • "This is the best club!"
  • [On why the person is not reading books off their home bookshelves] "My bookcases are for emergencies!"
