LHS English Department Philosophy Statement

The aims of the English Dept and our District DARING mission have many similarities. Our students are asked to be Dreamers and Doers when they read, exploring new worlds and new ideas. Students become Aware whey they conduct research and write compositions to understand the varied experiences and realities of others. Through the process of writing, revision, and reflection, students build their confidence and demonstrate Resilience. Students are Inquisitive in many ways: when writing narratives, they think creatively; when conducting research, they ponder problems and propose solutions; and when they construct arguments, they are guided by evidence and reason. Whether giving presentations or working in small groups, participating in virtual environments online or discussing face-to-face in a seminar, students are expressing themselves in many modes and being Nimble. Finally, to develop a Global perspective, students build relationships, communicate effectively, seek to understand others and value diversity.
